Lets Talk Seed Storage!

Lets talk about seed storage! As seeds are a hot commodity these days its important we learn how to store them properly! Theres no point in going to the trouble of buying seeds if you store them in a way that renders them useless.

My suggestion is to avoid buying seeds for non reputable places. Always look for reviews on a company or website before you make your purchase. Also be sure to always check shipping times! You may place a order well before you need to plant or start those seeds and they may not arrive for months.

Once you receive your seeds and have planted all you need lets get them ready to store! Some seeds will come in a resealable pouch others will come in a paper pouch. This is important because for seeds to store well they need to have as little air and moisture as possible. Once you open those paper packets fold the top down and place then in a sealable sandwich bag. Or if its available to you vacuum seal the seed packet for extra moisture protection. Typical seeds left out will a season or two but if stored properly can last years!

If you can, I like to save those little silica packets when I order things to put in the zip lock bags. Those little things come in so handy. You can actually make your own pretty easily! At a verity of craft store they sell silica crystals for flower drying. All you need is one bag of the crystals and a pack or two of coffee filters!

For long term seed storage the freezer is the place to be! Don’t store your seeds open in the freezer they will absorb moisture and take on the smells of whatever you have frozen. If your like me storing seeds for the first time all you seed will smell like a half beef.... After that unpleasant experience I ordered a photo storage tote! Most craft stores have seasonal sales or good coupons keep your eyes open for a good deal. The photo storage totes and boxes are just the right size for seed packets and typically have 4x6 boxes that store in a larger box for double the protection! So no more freezer smell... Now your seeds will last for years air tight and protected from moisture!!
